The best security technique is the one you'll actually use and since the ThinkPad secure drive is extremely easy to use, I love it. Plug in the USB connection, punch in your personal code and you have over 300 GB of storage.Unplug the USB and the HD is secure again. Sometimes, brainless is good.

Before, I used TrueCrypt to protect files via software encryption.Since it's free, the price was right.But, I could never create file vaults larger than 2 GB; operator error, most likely.

I've read that the rubberized cover on the Lenovo HD is common on Lenovo products.I rather like it, since it always feels secure in my hand.Ever held an Amazon Kindle? The Lenovo is on the other side of the "slippery" spectrum. For fashionistas though, the dull black Lenovo probably won't accessorize well.

The Lenovo looks very similar to the 500 GB Apricorn PadlockA2, which is much cheaper than the Lenovo. I didn't choose the Lenovo over the Apricorn for any technical reasons, I was just unaware of the Apricorn's availability. That got a five star Amazon customer review also.

More so than most products, the decision on whether to buy the Lenovo boils down to a single factor; price versus convenience. You can buy any number of hard drives from Amazon and then use TrueCrypt to encrypt your files. But if several members of your family need secure storage and you want the best solution THAT THEY WILL ACTUALLY USE, consider the Lenovo.
