SYBA PCI Ultra ATA / 133 IDE Controller Card Review

SYBA PCI Ultra ATA / 133 IDE Controller CardI couldn't get RAID to work on Vista. The RAID configuration manager keeps uttering "GetDriveLayOut:CreateFile failed" when started, causing the controller and attached disks to be missing in the configuration panel. A quick web search shows this to be a very common problem amongst Vista users and even some Windows XP users, with no known solution except giving up on RAID and using only the JBOD mode.

But even the JBOD mode requires the dedicated RAID driver. Support of the VIA 6410 is not sufficient ... Unfortunately the Linux driver provided on the CD is for Fedora Core 1, making this device unusable on any Linux distribution less 6 years old. And no Windows 7 is provided. So much for wanting to access my pile of IDE disks on a recent computer.

I thought that going for a cheap IDE controller with no fancy features would reduce the risk of issues. After all, IDE controllers have been out there for a loooooong time. Well, that's not the case with this Syba controller. :-(
