Minotaur Ultimate Gaming Computer with Intel 3.06ghz Core i3-540, 4gb DDR3, 750gb SataII, DVD-+RW, Nvidia GTS250, Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Full Version 64 Bit Review

Minotaur Ultimate Gaming Computer with Intel 3.06ghz Core i3-540, 4gb DDR3, 750gb SataII, DVD-+RW, Nvidia GTS250, Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Full Version 64 BitI purchased this computer in hopes of playing some of the news games that just came out.
I loaded every single game (WOW, Call of Duty, Bio-shock, Crysis, Age of Empires) and a bunch of office applications and this system handles all of it like a champ.
The video card performs nice and i have had no real issues with the system. The shipping was relatively cheap and i like the fact that i can expand this system
down the line and i am not limited to what the system came with. Also the really nice thing is if you have a question you can call the company (located in Las Vegas, NV). Great system and i would suggest everyone to purchase this as a gaming rig!

Crucial Technology 512MB 184-Pin PC2700 333Mhz DIMM DDR RAM Review

Crucial Technology 512MB 184-Pin PC2700 333Mhz DIMM DDR RAMOur bottom-end Compaq PC, with Windows XP and only 256M of memory, was taking 30 - 60 seconds to bring up Outlook or Word. I added this 512M board in 5 minutes, start to finish, and the restart recognized it with no problems or alerts. It helped immensely with throughput and we've had no problems with it.

We called 1-800-GATEWAY for support. Guess what? If you buy a Gateway anywhere but their website you must call a separate toll number. WTF!? Then we needed to restore it but the restore partition was bad. Had to get the recovery disk. They charged me $20 for a $1 CD-R. Then it wouldn't work, and they wanted to charge me to tell me how to use it. Again WTF? These people are horrible. Save yourself a lot of trouble and get a Mac. Get HP. Get an abacus. Intel PWLA8391GTLBLK PRO/1000 GT Desktop Network Adapter Review

Intel PWLA8391GTLBLK PRO/1000 GT Desktop Network AdapterThere are several different network interface cards that can be described as Intel Pro/1000 GT Desktop Adapters. The Intel PWLA8391GT, PWLA8391GTBLK, and PWLA8391GTLBLK NICs all have the same electronic specifications. The "BLK" cards come in packs of 20, though they may be sold individually.

The card advertised here is the GTLBLK. The "L" after "GT" stands for "Low Profile," meaning that this card has a smaller form factor than a regular PCI card. Unless you are sure that your PC has a low-profile Micro-ATX or Flex-ATX or 2U case that requires low-profile cards, don't buy this low profile NIC, buy a standard sized PWLA8391GT or PWLA8391GTBLK.

This card is not a server adapter, as another reviewer asserts. The Pro/1000 cards were designed as desktop adapters, as their product description indicates. The other reviewer also says that these cards do not run in PCs, but of course they do: they run in small PCs designed for small PCI cards.

The Intel Pro/1000 GT cards are great NICs, well supported and documented, very fast, extremely reliable, and amazingly inexpensive. They will communicate perfectly well with your 100Mbps NICs, until you upgrade everything to gigabit.

Apricorn 1.5TB Aegis Desktop 3.5-Inch USB 2.0 / eSATA External Hard Drive Review

Apricorn 1.5TB Aegis Desktop 3.5 inch USB 2.0 / eSATA External Hard DriveThis thing is a complete joke. First off, it does not work at all with Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HDC models, only the 8300HD series (on Time Warner Cable at least). Simply does not recognize the external drive.

So, an immediate call to their customer service got me an answer "yeah, it doesn't work on the HDC, we've been meaning to get that info out". Thanks very much for mentioning that ANYWHERE before I purchased it.

Next step, call TWC, ask to get an HD instead of HDC box (still couldn't tell you the difference and neither could they, but I know the HDC is the newer and much more common box). I didn't want to lose all of my existing recordings now that I didn't have much confidence this would work on the other box either, so I brought home a second DVR and put my original one in the bedroom. Hooked up the Expander to the new box and vuala! works like a charm. NOW FOR THE REAL PROBLEM.

So as I am happily taping away about a hundred hours of shows and bragging to all what a great little item this is, I am completely oblivious to the fact that EVERY TIME the cable box is REBOOTED, UPDATED, UNPLUGGED, or otherwise INTERRUPTED, the Expander is no longer recognized and needs to be reformatted, hence LOSING ALL RECORDINGS. Inevitably, the box started acting goofy and required a reboot. Without knowing otherwise I did a restart. When it started back up, I could see all of my recordings listed, but couldn't play them, the Expander would need to be formatted all over again in order to work.

This is ridiculous, and sure enough, when I go to Apricon's website, there it is under FAQs that whenever the cable box is reset, all recordings will be lost. Except they make it seem like the only time your box would actually be disconnected from power would be if your cable company made you get a new box. Not for the more routine and ever frequent instances of power outages, moving furniture, swapping cables, or whenever your box starts acting goofy and you just need to refresh it with a reboot...

What good is having 864 hours of recorded space if you lose everything if the box hiccups or the power goes out? If I have to back up everything on a DVD I may as well just stick with the original set top DVR.

Complete waste of money and time. Would be an excellent product if it worked. Maybe in a few years someone will get it right but I wouldn't trust APRICORN again.

Apple Mac mini MC408LL/A Snow Leopard Server Review

Apple Mac mini MC408LL/A Snow Leopard ServerThe new Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server has just been wonderful. We already have about 100 of them running here at Macminicolo as production servers and they've performed great.

A few comments on hardware:

- In this machine you have two 500GB drives. By default, they are two separate drives. When you configure on startup, the default prompt is to have your services running on the drive called "Server HD" and the backups go to the drive "Macintosh HD2." Of course you can change this to however you want, but that is the default.

- You can also put the two drives in RAID 1 or RAID 0. To do this, you'll need to boot from the restore disc that comes with the machine. Since there is no optical drive on the Macmini, you'll either need to use the Remote Disk feature and take advantage of a Mac or PC drive on the network. (This works wonderful) Or you can purchase the SuperDrive for MacBook Air which plugs into the USB drive of the Mac mini and works fine. Personally, I'm not a fan of RAID, but I know others are.

- This machine comes with 4GB of RAM, which is more than enough for most things. You can also upgrade to 8GB of RAM if you'd like to crack it open. This isn't "officially" supported by Apple, but works well.

- Like all other Mac minis before it, this machine is nearly silent. It's wonderful in that sense. It also runs cooler since the optical drive is what produced most of the heat in the last ones.

- For connectivity, you have a FW800 and 5 USB. For a display, you can use mini DisplayPort or mini DVI. (There is a mini-DVI to DVI converter that comes in the box.) And of course, the machine will also run headless without any problem at all.

And now a couple mentions of software info:

- This machine comes with a license of Unlimited Client Snow Leopard Server. That's a wonderful deal since it's $499 if purchased on it's own. This is a full copy with no limitation. You'll have the blue card with the serial in your packet.

-The machine will also run Snow Leopard just fine if you'd rather install it on this machine and use your Snow Leopard Server license somewhere else.

- For the first time on these Mac minis, Applecare also covers basic setup of Snow Leopard Server. (This is a separate, expensive option when buying an Xserve.) You can call AppleCare and they'll help you configure your server. Very useful.

Overall, these new machines are just fantastic. Our customers love them.

Velocity Micro Edge Gx520 Desktop (2.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Processor, 4 GB RAM,1 TB Hard Drive, ATI 4870 HD 512MB, 20x DVD Burner, Vista Premium) Review

Velocity Micro Edge Gx520 DesktopThis unit is built like a tank and it seems to have everything you need and then some.I had a Sony and it was a good unit but all of the new models seem to be going to that "all in one" approach where it gets outdated in a couple of years and then you have to recycle the whole thing. This unit is built to be upgraded over time and the stuff in it is state of the art.

I would give it 4 stars for serious effort. The only issue so far is that many of the drivers on the system were out of date and I had to spend the better part of a day finding all of the drivers and downloarding them from various web sites.

All in all I would say that this is a good system for the money.

7-PORT Desktop USB Hub * with ps Review

7-PORT Desktop USB Hub * with psPurchased for use with a new iMac desktop. The ports in the hub are responsive, even after bringing the Mac out of "sleep". Long periods of inactivity don't cause drifting or loss of peripheral connectivity as with many other powered USB hubs. The front two USB ports are handy and convenient for two flash drives. Nice small footprint and attractive, too. This is the same Belkin hub that is recommended up on the Apple site.

HP Pavilion P6110F Desktop PC Review

HP Pavilion P6110F Desktop PCI just recently bought this machine at my local Office Depot store, and it's a wonderful, cheap powerhouse. I had a couple reasons for choosing this machine, and there are them:

(1). Its processor is Intel branded. Because of bad experiences with AMD, I only buy Intel.
(2). It has expansion slots, AKA it is a big tower, not those tiny, unexpandible towers. This is good for when I want to upgrade the weakest point of this machine: The graphics card.
(3). Lightscribe disc labeling technology.
(4). Built-in card reader
(5). Price! At 500, it's a steal, [...]
(6). RAM! 6GB is godly... I couldn't ask for more.
(7). Hard drive space... 640GB is wonderful as well for a machine of this price tag.

There are a couple let-downs, here are them:
(1). Graphics card. It is a built in decroded POS, and has problems playing Halo 1. I plan on upgrading this though, which is why I bought the larger version of this machine.
(2). Preinstalled programs... HP has this as its major let down. However, you can SLOWLY remove everything, and I just installed the Windows 7 RC which erased everything, as well as make the machine faster!

Overall, this is a great machine for the price. No slow downs at all, pretty quiet (I have a netbook with an SSD so I'm pampered with quiet computers), and it just works. I recommend it to anyone!

More info; 9/27/09:
Machine is still running incredibly well! I have added the EVGA *LOW POWER* 9600GT graphics card (which barely fits ;) ). It can now play just about everything... And, the low power makes the PSU not as stressed (it's pretty weak as a PSU) but it's all still working great. I've also added an eSATA external HDD part, and everything's perfect. I'll update later with any problems!

Dell Studio Hybrid PC, color slate Review

Dell Studio Hybrid PC, color slateThe size is just great - mine sits horizontally, tucked away on a crowded cabinet shelf.Startup was simple - I took it out of the box, connected the cables, and started working. No problem.

No issues with Dell, so I can't comment on that.I ordered this through Dell's website, and that went smoothly.

If I was going to order one now I might wait until W7 is available.

Acer Aspire AH340-UA230N Home Server Review

Acer Aspire AH340-UA230N Home ServerQUICK SUMMARY:Acer's server, when configured correctly, provides home users and small offices a powerful solution for automated backups, restores, remote access and media server capability. However, configuring this server can be challenging, and Acer makes little effort to help its customers.Microsoft's Windows Home Server is a terrific -- and stable! -- operating system.Add a 2nd hard drive, too, and you've got redundant data storage.Cautiously recommended.

*** SPECIAL NOTE as of February 6, 2010:McAfee Antivirus automatically updated their software to Version 5, which totally screwed up my server!STAY AWAY from McAfee!!If you buy this server, immediately use Remote Desktop to open the server's Control Panel, choose Add or Remove Programs, and uninstall McAfee from your server!McAfee cannot be trusted!Read the end of this review to learn more.

Note: I bought the earlier AH340-UA230N model, which came with a single 1TB hard drive. The latest model sold by Amazon directly is the Acer Aspire easyStore AH340-U2T1H Home Server, which is *exactly* the same as the AH340-UA230N model EXCEPT it comes with a single *2TB* hard drive.

What follows is my review of this Acer home server, based upon my personal experience with it since purchasing one in late June 2009.If you read this very long review, you'll learn quite a bit about this Acer server and the Windows Home Server operating system. You'll also read about some minor issues I've run into, and how to workaround those issues.I've owned this server for six months now, and it's been a good experience overall. If you buy this Acer server, you're not going to get much help from Acer. So for any problems, your own technical know-how and the Internet community are your best sources of help.

In short, I bought this Acer server and successfully installed it on my home network. In very large part, it's doing what it's supposed to be doing, that is, it automatically backs up my four-computer home network, and it gives me remote access to my data, too. Thus far, I have only one small, re-occurring issue which I'll share in a moment.

The out-of-box experience is pretty good, but don't expect much by way of documentation. You'll need to look elsewhere to understand all the ins-and-outs of using Windows Home Server (WHS).Although the "Quick Start" booklet seems very thick, it's actually got the instructions in about five or six languages, and so when you read the English section (if you read English), you'll only see how to set-up the server with a little narrative and black-and-white screenshots that are difficult to read.Fortunately, the setup is pretty easy, and they do include a larger poster with just the absolute essentials (which is what I used), and the poster was good enough. In short, plug-in the ethernet cable from the server to your wireless router, and you're in business. The server is heavier than I expected, and *quieter* than I expected (much less noisy than my desktop computer).

Then, you install a CD in one of your available networked computers to install the Server Console on the installed-from computer, and to begin configuring your new server. One things stands out in my mind here...the instructions say turn-on your server and wait until the blue LED light is glowing steady.Trouble is, there are about seven or eight lights glowing at this point (one light for each of the four disk drive bays, a power-on light, a network light, an "information" light, and possibly a disk activity light), and some of the lights glow purple, not blue.Suffice it to say that you should wait a few minutes just to make sure everything is settled before you start server configuring.

The server configuration went pretty well, I thought.Do a Google search for "Acer Windows Home Server Review" and you'll find a website where someone has very helpfully documented the entire install process using color screenshots of each step. The installed server console program (running on one of your networked computers) is not resizeable and won't maximize, which is annoying. You can use Remote Desktop Connection to actually login to your new server (if you're not familiar with Remote Desktop Connection, it lets you connect to another computer from the computer you're using).

In a very short time, my old, quirky Gateway desktop computer (circa 2003, XP Pro, 2Ghz CPU, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD) was recognized by the new Acer server, and I was creating user accounts on the server that match my desktop computer (you should use a password on your user accounts, and be sure to specify the same password on the server as what you use for the desktop/laptop account).

At this point, I had my first problem -- the Gateway's connection to the server would get lost inexplicably during the first attempt at a manual backup.Long story short, I completely reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP-3 on the Gateway desktop, reinstalled the Windows Home Server Console, and was able to begin getting successful backups until I got to the point where I restored all my digital media files (using Acronis and an external hard drive -- not using the new Acer server) and then tried a WHS backup, which fails inexplicably.Could be my aging and quirky Gateway hardware, but it's a fresh install of XP and the error messaging is vague and unhelpful.

Notably, my three laptops (running XP Media Edition w/1GB RAM, Vista Ultimate w/2GB, and Windows 7 Ultimate w/4GB of RAM) backed up their contents perfectly -- no troubles at all, even backing up a very large VMWare virtual hard drive (which is a single, physical, 20GB file on my Vista laptop).

Very cool feature:This Acer will wake-up either a sleeping or hibernating computer to do the backup in the middle of the night! So, don't turn-off your computers, just put them in sleep/hibernate mode so they don't use much power, but will still get backed-up.(Note:WHS does *not* use Wake On LAN technology, which doesn't work reliably in all environments - the WHS technical strategy for waking sleeping/hibernating computers works much better than WOL).The WHS backups are incremental, so you can return to any previous point in time during a restore -- you aren't limited just to what was done last night. This is handy if you want to restore your computer to the way it worked one month ago, when it was working reliably (you'd probably do a 2nd restore, then, to load all your most recent data following the system restore).

To get remote access to work correctly, you need to modify your ISP's modem setups (your ISP's modem most likely has a built-in router, too).Choose "Bridged over Ethernet" protocol in the modem setups, and then configure your wireless router that's attached to the modem so it is a PPPoE connection (you'll need your ISP's account name and password for the router configuration).Once I got through this headache, I was able to gain remote access to my server -- very cool feature!!(BTW, don't count on any technical help by AT&T/Bellsouth - you won't get any that's helpful to you). You may also have trouble if your ISP blocks certain ports, like ports 80 and 443.One Amazon customer reported that Verizon blocks those two ports which are necessary to get remote access to your server.(ISPs generally don't like the idea of you running a server from a residential high-speed connection).

I did a successful restore of my quirky Gateway computer, just to see what that's like.Very simple.Install a Restore CD in the computer (which must be connected by ethernet, not wirelessly), and choose a backup on the server you'll use for the restore.I did this twice, and it worked perfectly and easily.A computer with XP SP-3, Office Pro and maybe 5GB of personal data was restored in about 20 minutes!

In short, it's a 4-star product because I can't backup my digital media files on my Gateway. My Gateway desktop hardware *is* quirky, so that very well might be the problem root cause, but even still, the WHS backup is unhelpful in diagnosing the exact issue for me.(The Windows Event Viewer alludes to a buffer space issue with a socket, but that's beyond the home consumer's ability to understand).

**** July 2, 2009 UPDATE

I've had this for just a few days now, and things are working nicely.I've got all my personal data on a shared folder, making all my data accessible anywhere on the Internet (by design - I could turn off remote access if I wanted).Everything is working very well.Using Offline Files and Folders (on XP Pro or Vista Pro/Ultimate), I've now got a great solution to carrying my data with me on my laptop.Note, though, that for the auto-backup function to work, your laptop should be plugged in, and I noticed this morning that the kids' laptop didn't go back to sleep after getting awakened for backup. That's only been a problem with one of my four computers, so it's probably computer-specific, and not a problem with WHS.

I added another 1TB hard drive: Western Digital 1 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD10EADS.There's no instruction on how to actually do that, but here's the key:slide the orange knob on the front of the empty drive bay to take the cage out -- swinging that cage door fully open will disengage a hard drive from the server (but at the moment, the cage is empty, so it really doesn't do anything). One side of the mostly-plastic cage is meant to be gently bent so you an insert the new hard drive and fit it into the four button-pins (it's not screwed into the cage). When you slide the cage back into the...Read more›

The EasyStore AH340 comes with a 1 TB hard drive, but it also includes three additional hot-swappable hard drive bays that enable expansion up to 7 TB--providing more than enough room for filing, storing and backing up a vast library of songs, videos, photos, games and documents.

    Intel Atom Processor 230
    Microsoft Windows Home Server
    1 TB Hard Drive
    2 GB DDR2 Memory
3 hot swappable hard drive bays
    5 USB 2.0 Ports
    1 eSATA Port
    Gigabit Ethernet

The Acer Aspire EasyStore AH340 home server offers a compact footprint and stylish blue LED status lights (see a larger view of the features).

It includes three hot-swappable hard drive bays with simple, easy access to the drives (see a larger view; also see a view of the rear of the server). Offering a compact footprint of just 7.8 x 7.1 inches, the EasyStore AH340 is both stylishly and functionally designed with a piano black bezel that's complemented soft blue LED status lights. It's powered by an Intel Atom processor 230, and it features 2 GB DDR2 memory, 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet, one eSATA port, and five USB 2.0 ports. The one-touch USB copy function enables quick file uploading--just plug in a USB device, push the button on the EasyStore AH340, and the data is automatically sorted and stored by file type into designated folders.
The Microsoft Windows Home Server operating system centralizes digital media in one location, making it easy to access files, photos, videos and music from any PC on your network. It also protects critical data by creating an image-based backup of every home computer every day, so you can restore a single file or an entire PC. With Windows Home Server, users can access the home network from the office or the road, for full access to their files and applications, just as if they were sitting in front of their home PC.
The hot swappable HDD cage enables you to increase your data storage by adding up to three 3.5-inch internal hard drives--allowing you to max out your storage capabilities at an amazing 7 TB (yes, that's terabytes). The cage is outfitted with release levers for each drive to keep them secure. In addition, a recovery/reset pinhole provides additional data protection by enabling system restores and data recoveries with just one-touch.
The server works with DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) 1.5 Certified Home Server (DMS) and digital media player (DMP) to enable music playback as well as photo and video viewing on a TV. For internet security, the EasyStore AH340 comes with a 60-day free trial of McAfee Internet Security Suite 2008.
24/7 Global Access to Your Data
The Aspire easyStore offers a variety of networking benefits inside the home as well as remotely. For example, parents can access their children's homework while traveling for business. They can also upload videos and photos from sports events or summer vacations to the server, even while away from home. At any time, from anywhere, every family member with a PC in the home network can access photos, videos, music and other documents from the home server.
This centralization of digital data saves significant time by eliminating the need to transfer data from one PC to another, every time someone wants a photo, video or other document that's stored on another PC. It's also a safeguard. If a netbook or notebook is damaged, lost or stolen, users don't lose their data along with it, since it's backed up at home. In addition, when a new system is added to the network, it's quick and easy to upload data from the computer to the server.

OCZ OCZ3P1333LV6GK DDR3 PC3-10666 1333 MHz 6GB Platinum XTC Triple Channel Kits Review

OCZ OCZ3P1333LV6GK DDR3 PC3-10666 1333 MHz 6GB Platinum XTC Triple Channel KitsGot these to replace some premium corsair ddr3 1600 ram that the motherboard did'nt like fo rsome reason. Then I decided to try these at 40% lower cost and it worked like a charm. I even got to overclock with these (mild OC). Thankfully I bought another kit to max out my memory slots (i.e. 12GB) and have no issues running the box 24/7. When I bought, this was the cheapest 6GB kit available from anywhere. Now it costs 80% more!!! Only cons: uses DDR3 1066 RAM chips so I am guessing this might be an issue for serious overclockers as it might have less headroom.

iBUYPOWER Gamer Extreme 941i Black Desktop (Windows 7 Home Premium) Review

iBUYPOWER Gamer Extreme 941i Black DesktopThis machine is fan-freaking-tastic for the money, no question.I was a little nervous about buying an ATi video card, as most of the high powered games are optimized for Nvidia chipsets, but this baby does NOT disappoint.I can run Age of Conan, one of the most graphically intensive games on the market, at 100% full blown settings and get 70-100 fps (frames per second).Only when the action gets majorly intense with large numbers of other players casting huge spell effects does the fps drop to about 25.As a comparison, my "old, but highpowered gaming machine" with an Nvidia 9800 ran at low settings at 40 fps, and would drop as low as 5 in major PvP action sequences.

You may be concerned that there is not enough RAM or hard drive space.Don't worry.500GB Hard drive is more than enough for most people, but the system has four more hard drive bays, so don't be afraid to buy a second one later. And the hard drive mounting system is one of the easiest to work that I've ever seen.

The 6 Gb RAM is more than adequate for optimum performance, BUT the machine has 6 DIMM slots and only 3 are used.In other words, you can add more memory for cheaper than the price difference of other more expensive machines, if you absolutely MUST have it.

Additional slots with crossfire tech on the Radeon card if you ever want to run dual cards, but I don't know why you would need to.

Also, the machine is ultra cooled and runs cool and smooth even after several hours with hardcore software running.

YOU'LL LOVE IT.BUY IT.

White OBELISK Modern-Style 2.1 Amplified Computer Speaker System for Laptop, Netbook and Desktop Computers - 20-watt with Subwoofer and Bass Equalizer - PLUG-N-PLAYI just received these speakers today. They are very easy to set up, (takes no time to figure out at all). I was slightly disappointed with their construction, for paying 40 dollars I would think that they would feel more substantial. Also the subwoofer is pretty useless at the high output range, and pretty pitiful overall, but what can you expect for the price. These are very sharp looking speakers and I will display them proudly. If you are looking for a good subwoofer, spend some more money, but for dedicated laptop speakers they work fine.

Gateway DX4200-09 - Tower - 1 x Phenom X4 9100e / 1.8 GHz - RAM 4 GB - HDD 1 x 640 GB - DVDRW / DVD-RAM - Radeon HD 3200 - Mdm - Gigabit Ethernet - Vista Home Premium 64-bit - Monitor : noneThis is my second Gateway desktop. Not much over a year ago a model like this was selling for about $200 more. Yet, now, you get a 64 bit system (crunches data much faster), a quad core that hardly anything can slow down, big hard drive, and a good quality of design and construction.

Also important is the quality of Gateway support: the one question with my previous model was handled via a chat session with a tech who knew what he was talking about and was very professional.

The Vista SP1 which it ships with has been a pleasant experience. It's best to discount all the dissing it gets and just see how well it works in practice. There is a learning curve if you are coming from XP, but it is worth getting to know. I like it. I probably would like Apple's Leopard operating system, too, but I don't care to pay anywhere from two to six times as much for their machines.

I just surf the web, do light photo and video processing, and watch a movie on it sometimes. For these tasks this machine is overqualified - a dual core machine would do about as well. But, how about a few years from now? A quad core machine may well be necessary for these or similar tasks then.

A little confession:I took my previous Gateway desktop apart to replace the motherboard with a newer type. I was impressed with the quality of design and construction. The Apple desktop which starts at around $2500 would impress me much more, but I don't need its particular qualities for what I do with a computer.

You ought to know that the setup of this machine was the sweetest, most trouble free computer installation I have ever done. It just goes out and does practically everything for you. That is thanks to Vista and Gateway's well thought out systems.

The hard drive is a Western Digital, which has a good reputation. But start backing up as soon as possible after you finish the OS installation. By the way, there are no disks to load into the machine. It's all on the hard drive already.

My first backup after I had finished most of the setup to the point where I am happy with what is on the machine took up just 18.1GB on an old Maxtor 80GB external drive I had from a few years ago using an excellent backup software called ShadowProtect which has gotten excellent reviews and I would call it the easiest and best software of that type I have ever used.

You get 586GB free on the hard drive as it comes from the factory with the Vista and a small partition which I believe holds a recovery version. So, forget 640GB. The actual space you get is noticeably less that what is stated - it's always that way.

The ATI Radeon HD3200 onboard video chipset is fine for any ordinary use. Heavy gamers will have to pay another $100 or more for a video card such as the Sapphire ATI HD4830 which joins its power with the onboard unit to give much better gaming performance. I have that card which I will install shortly and leave some thoughts on how much better it is. You will also need a good power supply to go along with the HD4830 card. Corsair makes some good ones supplying 520 watts and up. Just around $100 as well. So, when you want to, this machine is upgradable.

I ran a cleanup of the unneeded files and also did a defragmentation for better disk performance at startup. The defrag took much less time than my previous Gateway. Vista SP1? 64 bit? Anyway, that's an improvement.

Also, gigabit ethernet may not be anything you need now, but in a few years with streaming video heading this way, you might be glad you have it. There were no problems whatsover with making the ethernet cable connection with my motorola modem/router. I didn't have to do a thing. Plug in the cable and forget it.

This has an onboard video out in the form of HDMI and VGA, which is what I'm using. The image quality to my HP 2207 monitor is excellent.

If you have this shipped to you, try to restrain the urge to rip open the package until a couple of hours have passed for it to warm up to room temperature so that there will not be condensation on the cold computer during winter shipping from moisture in the inside air.

It ships with a large, easy setup sheet. Just follow the color coding. You can't go wrong. In an hour and a half or so you will be through with the basic setup, but it may take five to ten hours of downloading and installing your favorite software to complete the installation.

Also important is the merchant: J&R Music And Computer World in New York. I have bought a few items from them during the past few years and they ship fast (I get it the next day near Boston with standard shipping) and seem to be straight shooters. Let you know how the graphics card install goes.

UPDATE AFTER 6 MONTHS:
No problema! Hardware is solid, dependable, certainly fast enough for me. It's still a great buy. I haven't even used half the hard drive space yet, so I would say for most people it has plenty. Card readers and CD/DVD units are still fine. Sound quality from the built in chip is excellent for playing my 20GB of music on my Klipsch powered speaker system. Just no complaints about this. It does what it should. I may upgrade to Windows 7 after the initial bugs are worked out in six months or so. Frankly, I haven't found Windows Vista to be bad - it is just something new to learn. I understand Windows 7 may use slightly less system resources and offer more eye candy for the trendy computer addicted amongst us. It has gotten good reviews in the NYT and major computer magazines. Maybe I'll put off buying a Mac.

UPDATE AFTER 8 MONTHS OF USE:
The machine went down about a month ago. No posting beep. So I upgraded my Core Two Duo HP laptop to Windows 7, installed a 320GB hard drive, increased core memory to 4GB and got a machine powerful enough to do what I had been doing on this Gateway desktop.

Not the end of the story though. Searching online forums on this model of Gateway and on the "no posting beep" symptom, I found that the problem was most likely that the core memory on the Gateway had failed. I remembered a cryptic message before it failed saying it was dropping to a slower memory speed.

So I ordered 8GB of 800Mhz DDR2 desktop memory, removed the old, installed the new core memory (relatively easy - just open the left side of the Gateway by removing two screws and pulling back and you'll find the core memory on the center right side of the motherboard and all you need to do is flip back the holding cams and pull) and, guess what! Success!!

So, my next project on this repaired desktop is to install a bigger power supply (as I said I would), a new AMD powered 4830 graphics card, and also upgrade to Windows 7, which I have found to be a much improved operating system. It gets your drivers, doesn't take long to install, and is easy, quick, in my view the best Windows operating system ever.

Logitech S520 Cordless Desktop Keyboard and Laser Mouse (Black/Grey) Review

Logitech S520 Cordless Desktop Keyboard and Laser MouseEDIT #3 8/31/09 - I'm having the unresponsive keys problem as well. With me it's mainly the [, ], o, and m keys.It has gotten worse over the last couple months, where I'll have to press each key at least two to three times (sometimes more) to get them to work. The battery light randomly flashes on and off every now and then as well.

I'll be replacing this keyboard as soon as I can afford to. This is the first time I've had a bad exeperience with Logitech, so I may give them another try. Granted, it won't be this model.

---------
I was in need of a new keyboard because my old cordless one was about 3 or so year old and starting to give up the ghost. After looking over all the options, I chose this set and I couldn't be happier.

The keys are low-set and exceptionally quiet. The only light on the keyboard itself is one that lights up when your batteries need changed (a feature I really like). One of my biggest complaints about my old keyboard was that it had no lights to let you know whether or not the Num or Caps lock keys were on. While there isn't any on this one either, the USB receiver does. There are bright LED lights for both Caps and Num, so you always know whether one or the other is on.

The Fn key is very handy as well, as it prevents the keyboard from looking cluttered with extra buttons. You simply press it and one of the F-keys to open up your word processor, spreadsheet, email, etc. The only extra keys are 9 media keys at the bottom, but they don't make it look cluttered at all. From left to right, there's three zoom buttons (100%, Zoom out, Zoom in), three volume buttons (mute, down, up) and three media keys (previous track, play/pause, next track). Once I installed the software, they worked immediately without having to mess with settings for which media player I use. I know they work for both WinAmp and Windows Media Player, but not for VLC.

The keyboard itself is very sturdy. I don't have a desk, so my keyboard either sits on my bed or in my lap. Even in my lap, it feels solid and I don't feel like it's going to keep falling out of it.

The included mouse is great as well. Full scrolling wheel (with available side-scrolling). And even an on/off button on the bottom of it to help conserve batteries. Like the keyboard, it also has an LED light on it that will alert you when the batteries are low.

I haven't owned this keyboard long enough to judge its boast on battery life, but considering I had to change the batteries out of my old mouse every two weeks or so, I'm hoping this one is better. At least this mouse will alert me when I do need to change them, unlike my old one which would spontaneously die.

All in all, a very good keyboard for the money. Very highly recommended.

Edit 2/16/09 - I just had to change the batteries in the mouse for the first time. It was no eight months, but considering that I use my computer heavily, I am still very pleased. I received both a warning icon in my system tray (which I noticed first) and then when I took my hand off the mouse there's a very bright red LED that slowly flashes to let you know it's low.

I used to turn the mouse off every time I shut the computer down, but I've forgotten to for the past month or so. If I had remembered, it might have added further battery time. But 4 months compared to only a few weeks tops with my old mouse is still a fantastic improvement.

Edit #2 3/24/09 - Not two days after receiving the notice about my mouse batteries being critical, my keyboard did the same. This time, I decided to wait and see exactly how long it took the keyboard to die completely before having to change the batteries. For a full day and a half my computer kept telling me the batteries were critical, but then something strange happened. The keyboard froze up for about three seconds and then the warning went away. I checked it and it said the batteries were suddenly good again.

It stayed that way until around two days ago (3/22/09) before it started to do the same thing, but at a more rapid pace. It would say the batteries were critical and then switch back to good status multiple times a day, finally to the point I got annoyed with it and changed them today.

So it appears the battery indicator is about a month off for the keyboard. I may have thrown out good batteries from the mouse because of this exceptionally early warning.

Still a nice keyboard, but the battery life warning needs worked on.

Kensington PilotBoard Laser Wireless Desktop Set 64390 Review

Kensington PilotBoard Laser Wireless Desktop Set 64390Like somebody said earlier, the newer models of this desktop set completely address the problems that people have complaining about. For me, there have been no dropped signals, and excellent response times with both the keyboard and mouse.

This set actually has a huge advantage over the logitech sets that I've purchased in the past... Range. I have an HTPC hooked up in my living room, so alot of my web surfing is done from my couch at about 15 feet away. Every logitech and microsoft model (minus the bluetooth sets) wouldn't even respond past about 6 feet. This one works like a champ, and costs much less than the bluetooth models.

The only con I really notice is the mouse is a bit "clicky" (meaning pretty loud when it's clicked). The rubber grips are kinda weird, but hey.. at least they're trying to be innovative. The construction feels pretty good.... not top of the line, but not definitely not cheap either.

I wouldn't really recommend this set as your main keyboard and mouse, but it certainly performs as advertised, and at a very reasonable cost. A great buy in my opinion.
