It is a solidly built box, with aluminum top and bottom and high-impact plastic ends.It came with all the cables I could imagine for USB, eSATA, and SATA-SATA.It also had a nice eSATA PCI extended bracket to seamlessly connect to your PC's SATA connector. The SATA drive, I bought separate, slipped right in.I had a moment of confusion when I mixed up the two flatish screws with the four beveled screws (flatish go inside to hold the side brackets) and the beveled go outside for a finished look.
I connected it in a USB configuration and my PC recognized the hardware right away.Although the manual is clear on the hardware assembly portion, it is extra skimpy on the software side. For Windows XP, you don't need to use the enclosed CD.But to get a brand new, unformatted drive to show up, you'll need to perform the following quick procedure:
(1) Right click on "My Computer" > Choose "Manage"
(2) Click on "Storage" on the left side of the dialog box > Choose "Disk Management"
(3) Right click on the Disk # (In bold type) > Choose "Initialize Disk"
(4) Right click on the black horizontal bar to the right of the Disk # > Choose "New Partition" (The Windows XP wizard will take you easily from there)
I've only had the enclosure for a short while and it runs cool. The aluminum casing is room temperature. The large fan on the side is amazingly quiet, yet moves a fair amount of air.It has a blue LED behind it that glows, but not too bright.
