The keyboard and mouse are not hooked to the computer with wires, but the receiver is and it has to be within a foot of the items in order to pick up their signal. So we can put the keyboard and mouse across the room from the PC, but we also have to stretch the wired receiver to just in front of them in order to use them! It almost defeats the purpose of having a "wireless" keyboard and mouse set. However, they do work just fine when the receiver is in very close proximity.
