While this has perhaps the best passive cooling exposure of the toaster style eSata docks it still has no fan.Drives will become toasty hot during use.There is no obvious simple way to mount a fan.

The dim power on light also serves as an access light.This is an improvement over the Vantec NexStor toaster eSata dock.The open design allows the hard drive connection/alignment to be confirmed, this is much better than other enclosed dock designs.

Gravity helps keep the drive seated on the connector, but the heavy metal base can be detached allowing horizontal operation.Leave the bulky heavy bracket at home for notebook mobile use.Even for desktop consider ditching the bracket.While it may make passive convection cooling fractionally better, it exposes the drive to additional tipping/falling/knock over hazards.

Unfortunately the SATA interface engineers failed to include current to power a drive.This will be remedied in the future, but for now you have to use a $&%#^ power adapter or "The Hybrid"power + esata bracket.The computer case bracket that comes stock does not include a power jack.The Hybrid bracket does and should have been included so you can ditch the vampire power adapter.

4/2009 there is a rebate to get Hybrid bracket for free.Otherwise search for ICY DOCK THE HYBRID POWER AND ESATA BRACKET SKU: 63764 MPN: MB559POWER+BRACKET.

USB2 max throughput is much slower than current hard drives.SATA is considerably faster than all currently available hard drives.Install a bracket and use eSATA to avoid bottleneck and booting limitations of USB.
