1st, you plug in the receiver which finds the drivers, then as long as both keyboard & mouse are each turned on, they work! From there you can install the software for use of extra buttons or to change functions. Only option I changed was to designate my email program. I tried it while on my bed about eight feet away, and it worked perfectly. I guess will have to wait a couple years to report the battery use, but even if it's only 1+ year it's cool with me. There are two settings for back keyboard height which is also cool. I'd say they did a lot of research, and I would also say they made a great product at a great price.
