I have an e-machine 3500+ that was justing chugging along with an PATA hard drive and PATA CD/DVD burners. Many times the CPU would hover around 100%, and occasionally drop to 50%.
Now with a SATA hard drive (and it's 32 Meg buffer) the same machine
gets into the 5-10% CPU usage when idling.
When launching my internet security suite (Blink by EEye) and my browsers, I might hit 99% CPU usage for a up to 30 seconds, then drops below 50%.
My system is also very quiet compared to how it was with the older PATA drive [another maxtor].
It's only been a few days, but so far so good.Regarding the other reviewer's 1 star review:
I know how irritating a bad product can be.
As they said, anything mechanical "will fail" sooner or later.
(we always hope for it failing Later, not Sooner)
Regardless of a company's warranty or past reputation; I've seen hard drives of all brands develop problems of either:
1. electronic (controller card or pre-amp circuit) or
2. mechanical (stepper motor, spindle motor, head crashes)
I install hard drives for client's. I also recover data from drives that "went south".
I've worked with 100's of drives over the past 15 years.
Brands including old ones that no longer are in business; like Conner and Quantum.
Plus brands like WDC, IBM, Hitachi, Seagate, Maxtor, and a few re-badged ones from compaq.
If anyone is interested in how hard drives work, and how you approach repairing them (like the "Click-of-death" error) the best book I found was by a guy named Scott Moulton.
His book title is Forensics & Data Recovery. [lulu publishing]
In 516 pages, he covers symptoms diagnosis, recovery software products and physically opening & repairing inner parts of the drive.
