HP Mini 210 HD Edition with 250GB HD; 1GB Memory Review

HP Mini 210 HD Edition with 250GB HD; 1GB MemoryI don't much believe in brand loyalty. I usually do a lot of research, using Consumer Reports, user reviews, expert viewpoints, and a particular brand's repair history in my decision to buy. But when it comes to "inexpensive" home computers, after using many brands over the past 25 years (Apple II+ anyone?), I've settled on HP, and I've been very happy with my HP desktops and laptops, until now.

I have owned the HP Mini 110-1030NR Netbook for the past seven months and wrote a rave review about it last year. I wanted to do the same for this HP Mini 210 HD, and I've been using it for about six weeks, hoping that I'll grow to like it but actually finding myself wanting to give it two stars. I gave it three because it's still a good computer, and the issues I have with it are mostly cosmetic and may not be a problem for others. Much of my review compares the HP Mini 210 to the HP Mini 110, since those are the only netbooks I have used.

I purchased the HD edition solely for the purpose of better resolution - fitting more on a tiny screen. I also liked the idea of the ventless bottom since I often use it on my lap and find laptop chill mats and fans to be an inconvenience. Since this was to function as my only laptop, I went all out, and my trusty 110 went to my very lucky daughter. Even though I like almost everything about the 110 better than the 210, she gets to keep the 110 due to its lower resolution.

Specs: HP Mini 210-1000 HD CTO, "black crystal" color
: self-upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium
: self-upgraded to Crucial CT25664AC800 2GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-6400 Memory
: Intel Atom Processor N450 (1.66GHz, 512KB) with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150
: 250GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
: 10.1" diagonal HD LED HP BrightView Infinity Widescreen Display (1366 x 768)
: HP Mini Webcam
: Wireless-G Card with Bluetooth
: one 3-cell and one 6-cell Lithium Ion battery
: 40W AC adapter (the 110 has a 30W AC adapter)

In addition to the RAM upgrade, I devote an entire SanDisk 4GB Extreme III Class 10 SDHC card to Windows ReadyBoost and I find this to be very effective in keeping optimum system speeds.

Other customizable options include an upgraded N470 (1.83GHz, 512KB) processor, a wireless-N card, an embedded GPS module with HP Navigator software, integrated WWAN with GPS, or Broadcom Crystal HD Enhanced Video accelerator with ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre.PROS:
-----

Worked right out of the box - easy setup, no pre-loaded junk, connects to WiFi and WWAN effortlessly

Beautiful screen for video when not drowned out by glossy reflective surface

Ability to play video and music and view picture library without booting the operating system

Upgraded running speed is fantastic and better than the same upgrades on the 110

Light-weight, sits easily in my lap, very portable

No vents on the bottom

Simple keyboard without a lot of confusing extra functions per key

3 USB ports

The 3-cell battery sits flush with the computer, keeping it nice and slim. The 6-cell sticks out, but not as much as it does on the 110, and that's never been a problem for me.

Improved power switch location, now on the right side and easier to access than on the front of the 110CONS:
-----

It goes without saying that there is no optical drive and no separate number pad, but just in case...

Does not feel as strong and study as the 110. The 210 seems to have a flimsier construction throughout.

I thought that no vents on the bottom meant that it would vent well out of the side vents. It does not. Venting definitely seems to be an HP liability. It burns up the bottom left side of the netbook. However, so far my system speed (with the upgrades) is still top notch.

The keyboard on the 110 is SO MUCH BETTER. The 210 has Chiclet-like keys, with large gaps in between that catch dirt particles quite easily. It has no Home or End keys. As noted above, I like the simplicity of the keyboard, but no Home or End keys? Seriously?

The Brightview Infinity screen. It was the only option. It's super GLOSSY, super reflective, super impossible to see in daylight. I sat in the sun and in the shade and played with the brightness settings, barely able to see the screen in either scenario. It's beautiful if you are in just the right light and are able to ignore the image of yourself staring back at you every time the background darkens just a bit. It also picks up fingerprints and dust particles like crazy. My 110 is not glossy and I wish I could have the same matte screen on my 210.

The touchpad. This is why I want to THROW IT OUT THE WINDOW! I've spent the past six weeks trying out the various Synaptics settings, yet it still frustrates the crap out of me. Others complained about the buttons on the 110 being on the sides instead of at the bottom of the touchpad, but I never had a problem with that and I miss the raised tactile buttons. With the 210, HP put the buttons back on the bottom where people seem to be more comfortable, but they also made them flush with the rest of the keypad. I click, I hear the button click down, it even makes the button on the screen appear as if I've pushed it, yet NOTHING HAPPENS. I have to press several times, EVERY TIME I want to select something. There seems to be this tiny little zone that actually works, that DOESN'T include the bottom edge where I naturally tend to click. With tap-to-click enabled, the cursor will jump all over the screen, and will constantly select items I've barely hovered over (and not tapped), yet rarely select anything that I am tapping-to-select intentionally. Changing sensitivity settings had no discernable effect. I don't always have a mousing surface - I often have to use the touchpad, and that sometimes makes the 210 something I dread using. I had no problem getting used to it on the 110, but the touchpad on the 210 is absolute garbage. To top it all off, the 210 touchpad surface shows ugly fingerprint marks while that of the 110 did not.

Synopsis: If you're looking for a beautiful netbook to stream video on, with a highly capable computer, then I can recommend this 210 HD. If you know that you will mostly be using a mouse with it, then I can recommend this 210 HD. If you need higher resolution in a 10.1" screen and there's nothing in the same range available, then I hesitantly recommend this 210 HD. If not, then I regretfully recommend you look elsewhere.

HUE HD Red PC / Mac Webcam from Clique Review

HUE HD Red PC / Mac Webcam from CliqueTHE CAMERA DESIGN -->5 STARS

The HUE HD Webcam is modern and has enough "style" to even appease my graphic designer senses. The camera body's construction is sturdy and the gooseneck is rigid, so stays in place when flexed. The camera attaches to the base via a USB connector (convenient if you have a monitor or laptop with a USB port and don't want to use the base). The base is weighted and has a cloth bottom so it won't scratch your desk. The overall look and construction of the camera is 5 STARS.

THE SOFTWARE -->4 STARS

After searching for a few months I decided to get this webcam because of its claims to be fully compatible with MAC OSX, which is true.First, I went to the company's website to check if there had been any updates to the software.**The software release on the website is version 1.3 and the CD that is provided says version 1.1.**I opted to download version 1.3 instead of installing from the CD.Installation was easy. The software has a bunch of video and compression options that are useful.

COMPATIBILITY --> 2 STARS **Must read for all Mac users**

I know that there isn't much info on the product because it is relatively new and most, if not all of the support info on their website refers to PC issues. So, I contacted their technical support because I wanted to know if it would work with iChat.Turns out the HUE HD Webcam is not supported by iChat. Here is the response that I got from their technical support team.

Hello,
iChat doesn't work with HUE HD Webcam, because the software was designed
to use Firewire Webcams. Hue HD WEBCAM have a USB interface like most
webcams you can find at stores. The alternative way to use iChat with
HUE HD Webcam, is ICHATUSB here is the link for a free download trail
version. http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/

So, I went to the website and downloaded the software and presto, the camera is located by iChat. The only downfall is that you have to spend another $9.95 for the software.

I have not tested the software with Skype, AOL or Yahoo but I have read other reviews stating that they worked fine with those programs.

OVERALL --> 3 STARS

Overall, I'm giving it 3 STARS because I feel that the compatibility issue is a big negative for Mac users.Hopefully the company will wise up and package their webcam with software that will operate the camera without having to refer a consumer to purchase separate software.

Pros:

-Super cool style that will suit just about anyone
-Sturdy construction
-Picture quality is above average webcams
-Voice quality is excellent
-Software interface is simple with numerous options
-Removable from base (can plug into USB equipped monitor or laptop)

Cons:

-Not supported by iChat unless you purchase iChatUSB software (another $9.95)
-Slightly expensive
-Little Mac support information on company website

I will add to my review as soon as I have tested it on other Instant Message programs.

Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B. Intel CPU Heatsink (LGA 775 / 1156 / 1366) (AM2** / AM2+** / AM3**) Review

Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B. Intel CPU HeatsinkIt's big. Almost big enough I gave it a 4 star review, but it works so well I couldn't subtract any points from this. I have an i7-920 on an Intel DX58SO motherboard, and I've got tall Corsair Dominator memory sticks. Because of the tall heatsinks on the Corsair RAM, I had to orient the heatsink in the non-classic direction. (It's blowing air from my video card down towards my power supply, as opposed to blowing from front of case towards back of case.) It didn't seem to affect performance. My idle temps dropped from 50C to 36C (122F to 97F). My fully loaded temps dropped from 77C to 60C (171F to 140F). Highly recommended unless you have a little case or its too packed in there.

Product Description:
The revised Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B. Intel CPU Heatsink now comes LGA 1156 ready and contains 2 sets of wire fan clips for optimal performance out of the box. Due to the originals very high praise from multiple review sites as well as winning the Editor's Choice Gold Award from [H]ard|OCP Enthusiast this cooler is sure to please. When it comes to air cooling this cooler cannot be beat! This heatsink has been carefully engineered for low to medium speed 120 mm fans producing around 57 CFM - fans in this range are quiet at under 26 dBA - but this heatsink still cools better than the competition! Six heatpipes pull heat up to the fins and away from the CPU. The heatsink ships ready to mount to either Socket LGA 775 or the latest Socket LGA 1366 and LGA 1156! **Sockets AM2, AM2+ and AM3 require optional retention hardwareThe tower type coolers have been the mainstream in the CPU cooling market for quite some time now, but upon closer inspection you start to notice that designs and engineering can only go so far as they slowly come to a bottleneck. After a while they all start to look the same with performance not worth popping the champaign. This is where Prolimatech comes in. We are here to challenge all possible odds and stray away from the norm. With that focus in mind comes the new Megahalems, tower CPU cooler. Never before seen are the new lows in temperature produced by an intelligent design of low air flow resistance with unmatched performance to boost; perfect for the true overclockers in all of us**PLEASE MEASURE YOUR CASE TO INSURE THIS HEATSINK WILL FIT BEFORE PURCHASING!! WILL NOT ACCEPT RETURNS UNLESS ITEM IS DEFECTIVE!**

SimpleTech SVM-DDR2100/512 512MB PC2100 DDR 184pin DIMMI looked on line for additional memory to speed up my machine since Norton Internet Security 2005 ate most of the memory that was left and made it's operation VERY slow. The memory was about $2 more than the cheepest I had found on the internet.Since I already had an account with Amazon, it made it easy to order. One I got it, I plugged it in, turned the computer on and it worked GREAT!Amazing what an extra 1/2 of Gig of memory will do to speed up your machine.Memory worked fine!Make sure you check with your computer's motherboard manufacturer for comptable memory before ordering any memory.

Gelid Solutions Tranquillo CPU Cooler Review

Gelid Solutions Tranquillo CPU Cooler"One of the most important things about the GELID Solutions Tranquillo is the fact that it has an excellent performance to cost ratio. We really can't fault GELID Solutions for the cost cutting and design quirks that make this cooler what it is since it really did impress us through almost every single test scenario. It may not be the best at all situations, but it was hardly ever the worst even though it barely breaks the $30 mark in some situations. If you are looking for excellent performance but don't want to shell out the $50 and more some higher-end units retail for, you can't go wrong with the Tranquillo."

Product Description:
The tower CPU Cooler 'Tranquillo' uses 4 power heat pipes and a special heat pipe constellation to achieve best heat transfer from CPU core to the aluminium fins in its class. After precise software simulation and calculation during the development stage a unique heat sink shape was created to lower air flow resistance as much as possible. A silent 120mm fan with the intelligent GELID PWM (Pulse Width Module) control has been chosen to make this heat sink more valuable. The fan blades were optimised to guarantee high airflow while running silently. The intelligent GELID PWM curve keeps the fan silent when no necessary cooling is needed and accelerates the fan speed whenever additional cooling is needed. The multi-award winning high performance GC-2 thermal compound is already included in the package.

4GB Kit 1600MHZ DDR3 Dimm Review

4GB Kit 1600MHZ DDR3 Dimm...but Amazon has been pestering me to submit a review, so here it is.

I ordered 2 Sets of 4GB DDR3 Kingston RAM on Sep 25th from seller "bevlips" for $650.00. I selected them because they said the item was "In Stock". HA!

The first email from "bevlips" said they order directly from the factory and then ship to buyer. That means they keep no stock whatsoever.

To make matters worse, they WON'T EVEN ORDER the item until they get the money from AMAZON which takes several weeks as I found out.

Every time I've emailed Amazon they tell me to "wait another few days for the item to arrive".

I've sent Amazon the emails I got from "bevlips" and asked them to please translate them because they are not understandable. A sample: "we do not recommend you to cancel the transaction. as our policy we only ship the item once the found had successfully transferred from amazon to our bank. which is still in progress, it shall not be another 2 weeks as we normally don't. but..."

Terrible experience so far. Original delivery date was Sep 30th. Amazon changed that to Oct 17th. On Oct 17th Amazon said wait three more days. On Oct 20th they said wait another three days. Same on the 24th. I've asked to cancel but again today Amazon sent me another email asking me to wait until end of day Oct 30th.

Amazon has not once actually contacted the seller to check on the problem, but they do keep saying that I am doing the right thing by contacting the seller directly. Good for me?

Thank you Amazon for the super customer service and support. I can't wait until I make more money so I can, again, just give it to you.

Graphtec Silhouette Craft Vinyl Cutter Kit w/ ClipArt CD Review

Graphtec Silhouette Craft Vinyl Cutter Kit w/ ClipArt CDI have both the Silhouette SD and the Cricut Expressions.I love the fact that Silhouette doesn't need any more cartridges and Quickutz offers reasonable image subscriptions. It does take more time to learn to use the Silhouette.I went through all the tutorials on [...] and was amazed with what it can do.The tutorials will take time but definitely worth it.The cutting mat was a real pain, it was too sticky and thin besides the replacements are expensive.I've found a solution though but cutting up a Cricut 12x12 mat to use with Silhouette, it works perfect. There are many ways to make your own mats, just do a search online. There are also ways to make your cricut mat sticky again so one mat lasts almost forever.
